How long does the online food safety unit take to study?

The online training and assessment modules take approximately 4 hours to complete, although most people don’t complete them in one session. The program allows you to do a little or as much as you want. It remembers where you are up to each time you log back in. The workplace practical assessment is due 10 days after the online section is completed.

The allergen awareness and basic food safety courses take approximately 30 minutes.

Assessments - What types of assessment will there be in food safety training and where?

Each online section of the training has a set of assessments relating to that module, these are either multiple choice or industry specific case study questions which assess your knowledge.

You will be assessed for your knowledge as you progress through the course and at the completion you will download a workplace assignment which is designed to test your skills.

Assignment - What is the assignment and how is it assessed

For the food safety supervisor course this is a practical demonstration of skills in your workplace or simulated environment.

To complete this you will need a third party observer who has a number of years experience in food preparation or who has a food safety qualification at the same level, or above, that being observed.

This person will observe you perform tasks and they will record comments in each of the boxes. They must put comments in every box and Yes/No/NA responses are not acceptable.

To download the assignment, click here (pdf).

Are there additional costs involved?

The enrollment fee is the only cost - there are no hidden charges. If you make a mistake you will be given an opportunity to re-do the assessment. Support is available from 9am to 5pm 7 working days. There is no additional charge for one-on-one trainer time, re-assessment or re-submission of an assignment.

Registration email is missing, how can I find it?

During purchase you should have also created an online account so you do not need the email that is sent. If you did not register during the payment process, check your inbox for the email. Many email programs place these kinds of emails in the "junk email" folder, so please check there. If you can not find the email please contact support and they will confirm the address for you so that you can use your user name and password to login.

How do I save where I am up to?

When you login and do the course the system will remember where you are up to so that if you come back later you can start from that spot.

How do I get my Certificate?

A Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment is provided as a PDF file which you can print out at the end of the training or login from another computer and print later or save and print.

Once you complete the course to view the certificate go to the "my courses" page and click on "MyCertificates" on the right hand side.

The NSW certificate is only available for those that buy the NSW course which includes the additional fee.

Do I need to install software?

You don't need to install anything on your computer. You just need a free copy of PDF reader to view the certificate.

Suitably qualified person (observer) - Who can be the observer for the practical skills checklist and who will be assessing me?

The online component of the course assesses your knowledge and the workplace assessment assesses your practical skills in the workplace (or simulated) environment. For the level 1 course this could be achieved over a single meal preparation. For the level 2 course records need to be taken over the period of a week

The 3rd party observer needs to be suitably qualified and/or experienced in food preparation. This can be someone who is already a Food Safety Supervisor or someone who has had a number of years experience in food preparation.

The observer will have to provide evidence of their certificate or their experience.

The observer may be under direct supervision via phone by a qualified assessor from Master Grocers Australia.

The observer needs to include comments about what they observed, sign off the assessment, and return it to Master Grocers Australia with the other parts of the workplace assignment, Master Grocers Australia's assessor may contact the 3rd party observer to validate the observations.

Is my old certificate still valid?

Certificates do not have expiry date, however there is a requirement that qualifications are ‘current’. Certificates must contain a nationally-recognised unit code appropriate to your industry.

Contact your council to check if they will accept the code and the date of your certificate.
